An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to co-operative societies, with objects not confined to one State and serving the interests of members in more than one State, to facilitate the voluntary formation and democratic functioning of co-operative s as people’s institutions based on self-help and mutual aid and to enable them to promote their economic and social betterment and to provide functional autonomy and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

Abstract

This Act grants the power to the Central Government to appoint a person to be the Central Registrar of Co-operative Societies. The Act also states that no multi-state co-operative society shall be registered under this Act, unless its main objects are to serve the interests of members in more than one state and its bye-laws provide for social and economic betterment of its members through self-help and mutual aid in accordance with the co-operative principles. Additionally, the Act provides for the establishment of federal co-operative that are federations of co-operative societies. The Act also lays down provisions for the registration, management, bye-laws of multi-state co-operative societies. Furthermore, the Act lays down the penalties for contravention of the provisions of the Act.
