Abstract

The Decree classifies the wetlands, terrestrial and marine area of the river Evros estuary and its wider region as a National Park. The Evros delta is considered to be as one of the most important European wetlands. Aim of the Decree is to establish rules on use, terms and restrictions, so as to ensure the protection, conservation and management of nature and landscape in this particular region. It also aims at the re-establishment of biological diversity, the protection and preservation of protected types of ecosystems and protected species of flora and fauna, especially migratory species, alongside with the prevention of unfavourable environmental repercussions in the area. With the Decree, the region is divided in eight (8) areas of protection, while a peripheral zone is also delimited. The Decree describes the exact delimitation of such areas and also contains detailed diagrams on maps (Annexes). The Decree provides for extensive restrictions, depending on the protected zone, on access and use of the park area and prescribes controlled grazing and agricultural activity as well as hunting and commercial and artisanal fishing. The institution of the Management Body of the park, the Administrative Council and the Regulations of Operation and Management, have been established already with Joint Ministerial Decrees by the Ministers of Environment, Spatial planning and Public works, Agriculture and Development.
