Abstract The Decree aims at implementing the provisions of Law No. 1650/86 “on the protection for the environment”, more specifically, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 20. Also it aims at harmonizing the Greek legislative frame with the provisions of Council Directive 90/219/EEC so as ensure that all appropriate measures are taken in order to avoid adverse effects on human health and the environment, which might arise from the contained use of genetically modified microorganisms (GMM). The Decree is composed as follows: Objectives (art. 1); definitions (genetically modified micro-organism, accident, limited use, etc.) (art. 2); field of application (art. 3); classification of GMM (art. 4); obligations of GMM users (art. 5); competent authorities – measures and procedures (art. 6); cases of modification of limited use of GMM (art. 7); measures for the prevention of accidents (art. 8); inspections and control measures (art. 9); reports to the Commission (art. 10); confidentiality of the information supplied (art. 11). Furthermore, the Decree contains four Annexes: Annex I, Techniques of genetic modification as mentioned in article 2 to this Decree and techniques to be excluded from the Directive; Annex II, Criteria for classifying genetically modified micro-organisms in groups; Annex III, Safety assessment parameters to be taken into account, as far as they are relevant, in accordance with article 5, paragraph 1 to this Decree; Annex IV, Information required for the notification referred to in article 5, paragraph 3.
