The main responsibilities of the Service shall be the prevention of negative environmental impacts and the hygienic education of the population through: (a) sanitary and epidemiological testing and toxicological and hygienic assessments; (b) disinfection and rodent eradication; and (c) inspecting the transport, storage and trade of foodstuffs and potable water. The Service shall also have the following functions: (a) registration of radioactive substances and of domestic and non-domestic waste; (b) licensing of activities involving pests and pathogens; and (c) sanitary protection of the national territory.
