Abstract

This Decree aims at protecting surface water, reservoirs and part of the Caspian Sea belongs to Azerbaijan from pollution by waste and wastewater. Content and quality of water used in fisheries shall be based on the standards and requirements defined in this Decree. Prohibitions are listed as a) discharge of wastewater into water bodies without permit, b) discharge of pollutants in wastewater of which the limit of maximum allowable concentration is not specified, c) oil spill into water bodies in pipelines and oil fields, d) polluting water bodies by untreated waste, ballast water and hazardous liquid and solid wastes, e) sewage disposal in areas of fish spawning, fish feeding and during winter hibernation, and f) discharge of waste and wastewater into water facilities set aside for research activities and have the status of state reserves. This Decree also sets forth provisions on protection of water bodies from radioactive pollution and elimination of the harmful effects on fisheries in water bodies. This Decree divides fishing into two categories due to the importance of water bodies: Category I includes water bodies used for regeneration, reproduction and protection of valuable fish species with high sensitivity to oxygen and Category II includes water bodies used for the other purposes of fishing. The requirements for the composition and properties of water bodies used for the purpose of fishing are listed in Annex I. The maximum allowable concentration of hazardous substances in water bodies used for the purpose of fishing are listed in Annex II.
