Abstract

This Act provides for the registration of ships in the British Virgin Islands and for the control on such ships and navigation by authorities of the Territory. The Act also concerns the prevention of collisions, safety at sea, the transport of dangerous goods, liability and compensation of oil pollution damage and matters concerning the International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund. A ship registered in the Virgin Islands under Part I of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894 of the United Kingdom shall be deemed to be a ship registered in the Virgin Islands under this Act. The Act sets out the entitlement of a ship to be registered and also concerns rights in ships such as ownership, mortgages, etc.
