Abstract

The present Act provides for the correct and efficient execution of the following international agreements for Austrian maritime ships: International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS); International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) as modified by the Protocol of 1978; Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG 72). The text - consisting of 21 articles – deals, inter alia, with the following aspects: Definition of terms, sphere of application, construction and maintainance of Austrian maritime ships; classification, transfer of competences; exemptions and deviations, Ordinances; attestations; obligations of the shipowner and the captain; accidents; official acts; competent authorities; penalties; entry into force; transitional provisions. One Annex is enclosed laying down minimum criteria for the recognition of organizations as classification societies.
