Abstract

The Livestock and Meat Products (TSE Control) Regulations 2015 lay down the rules for the prevention, control and eradication of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in the Falkland Islands. TSEs are diseases that affect the central nervous system of animals, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and scrapie. The document specifies the criteria and monitoring for determining the BSE status of the Falkland Islands, which is based on the relevant EU legislation. TSE prevention and detection: The document prohibits the feeding of certain animal products to ruminants and non-ruminants, and designates specified risk material (SRM) that must be removed and disposed of from carcasses. The document also requires the competent authority to implement an annual monitoring programme for TSEs, using rapid tests and approved laboratories. TSE control and eradication: The document outlines the measures to be taken by the competent authority and the abattoir operators in case of suspected or confirmed cases of TSEs, such as movement restrictions, killing and testing of animals, disposal of carcasses and products of animal origin, and notification of the Commission and other countries. The document also requires the competent authority to draw up a TSE contingency plan.
