Convention on the Law of the Sea for Japan. Abstract The Act confirms the territorial sea of Japan at 12 nautical miles measured from the baseline. Limits of certain designated areas shall be prescribed by Cabinet Order at a later date. The baseline shall be the low-water line, the straight baseline and straight line drawn across a mouth of a river or a bay (art. 2). Straight baselines and criteria for the use of baselines shall be prescribed by Cabinet Order. Article 4 deals with hot pursuit. A contiguous zone of twenty-four nautical miles is established under article 4.
