Abstract

This Law declares the ratification of the international treaty on genetic resources of plants, for agriculture and food. Contracting parties, convinced of the special nature of plant genetic resources for agriculture and food, their distinctive features and the problems that need to be solved; alarmed by the continuous degradation of these resources; aware that plant genetic resources for agriculture and food are one common concern for all countries, as all countries are highly dependent on related resources deriving from plant genetics for agriculture and for food production purposes; knowing that conservation, exploration, collection, characterization, evaluation and documenting of plant genetic resources for agriculture and food are essential in order to meet the objectives of the Rome Declaration on food security and the action plan the world food summit and for sustainable agricultural development for this generation and for future generations, and that the capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition to undertake such tasks should be strengthened urgently. The objectives of this treaty are the conservation and sustainable use of resources plant genetics for agriculture and food and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use, in accordance with the Convention on biological diversity for an agriculture sustainable and for food safety. These objectives will be realized by closely linking this treaty with the Organization of United Nations on Food and Agriculture, and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
