Abstract This Law consisting of 9 articles aims at developing the wealth of water resources and guaranteeing its optimal use by establishing the Ministry of Water Resources replacing the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. Main tasks of the Ministry are (i) develop strategies, policies and plans for the development; (ii) development and investment of water resources, surface and groundwater; (iii) prepare technical and economic feasibility studies for water resources projects; (iv) construction and maintenance of dams and irrigation projects, and assessment of their safety; (v) set up special plans for the control of floods and river basins; (vi) regulate water distribution and public awareness of the importance of preserving water wealth; (vii) ensure water for water consuming sectors; (viii) supervising and following up the implementation of water resources projects in accordance with the planned plans; (ix) protect surface and groundwater from pollution and give priority to environmental aspects in line with international standards; (x) reduce waste water.
