Abstract

This Law creates and regulates the management of the Kolkheti protected areas. It consists of 14 chapters: General provisions (I); Distinguishing competences in relation to creation and management of the Kolkheti protected areas (II); Location, surface area and boundaries of the Kolkheti protected areas (III); Territorial-functional organization of the Kolkheti protected areas (IV); Development programmes for permitted activities on the territory of the Kolkheti protected areas (V); Management of the Kolkheti protected areas (VI); Economic mechanism of the functioning of the Kolkheti protected areas (VII); Use and protection of natural resources on the territories of the Kolkheti protected areas (VIII); Economic activities on the territories of the Kolkheti protected areas (IX); International agreements and accords of Georgia (X); Land-use matters in connections with the creation of the Kolkheti protected areas (XI); Liability for violating this Law (XII); Transitional provisions (XIII); and Final provisions (XIV). The objectives of this Law include protection and restoration of Kolkheti wetlands which are rich in biodiversity; protection, restoration and maintenance of biodiversity, natural ecosystems, landscapes, and wild fauna and flora, especially ones listed on the Red List of endangered species; supporting sustainable growth of recreation, tourism and agriculture; protection, restoration and rational use of water, soil and other natural resources (among others, forests), protection of maritime area of width of 5 maritime miles for maintaining ecological balance in the coastal zone; creating favorable conditions for ecological education and scientific research, protection and maintenance of historical and cultural heritage, protection and monitoring of natural biological regimes of water objects.
