Abstract

This Law consisting of 40 articles aims to make Syria in line with international requirements relating to food issues. Main tasks are (i) ensure the safety, health and quality of locally produced, imported, exported and traded food; (ii) organize control over imports, exports and local food products in accordance with national and international standards adopted by the competent Authority; and (iii) implement international food conventions, including Codex standards and recommendations. Responsible fo the implementation of the Law and its compliance with the standards and recommendations of the Codex Alimentarius Commission is the Ministry of Economy and Trade. The Ministry, in accordance with the competent Authority, shall issue resolution regarding food hygiene issues. The Law specifies the general requirements for controlling the production and circulation of food. HACCP systems are implemented by some food manufactures, but this issue will be managed by special authority after establishing the National Council for quality. It will regulate food quality through criteria as standardization, metrology, accreditation conformity assessment, and marketing surveillance including monitoring the procedure of certification.
