This Law enters into force on 1 January 2019.
Abstract

Article 11 shall be amended to add the following wording: “Criteria for the acceptance of radioactive waste in a storage shall be considered criteria for determining whether radioactive waste and its packaging are suitable for storage and repository storage.” Article 3 shall be amended to add the following wording: “Safety of radioactive waste and radioactive waste management facilities would be ensured throughout the period of radioactive waste management and operation, and subsequently through passive safety measures.” Article 5 establishes the competence of the Ministry of Energy in the sphere of radioactive waste management. Article 9 shall be amended to add the following wording: “The obligation of the producer of radioactive waste is to comply with the requirements for the management of radioactive waste in accordance with the requirements for the management of radioactive waste until it is transferred to the radioactive waste manager.” Article 10 shall be amended to add the following wording: “The State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is a radioactive waste manager and is responsible for the management of radioactive waste discharged by radioactive waste operators and other radioactive waste generated during the operation and decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and other nuclear facilities, in particular: (a) collection radioactive waste and organize its transportation from other radioactive waste producers, perform initial, main and final treatment of radioactive waste and protect it; (b) disposal of radioactive waste; (c) closure of the repository of radioactive waste and supervise the closed repository; (d) management of radioactive sources and objects contaminated with radioactive materials left by the Government in accordance with the procedure established by the Government; and (e) performance of other obligations established in this Law and other acting legislation in the sphere of nuclear and radiation safety, radioactive contamination and radioactive waste.”
