Abstract This Law, consisting of 15 Chapters, creates the Animal and Plant Health System within the State of Paraíba (SUASA). This System establishes sanitary measure and classifies offences and penalties to protect plant and animal health and specifies administrative procedures for illegal activities. SUASA is responsible to promote plant and animal health through protecting measures to control sanitary requirements for the above mentioned plant and animal products, including their derivates, sub-products, residuals, inputs, as well as the classification of agricultural and livestock products. Objectives of SUASA are to guarantee: animal and plant health; hygiene and sanitary safety and technology of agricultural and livestock products destined to human consumption.
