Abstract This Law, consisting of five Chapters, establishes procedures, prohibitions, rules and precautions for the use of fires in farming, silvo-pastoralism and forestry practices. It specifies that from 1 July 2014 it is prohibited the use of fires even in the form of controlled fires for the purpose of burning plants or any other form of vegetation, contained in a range of thousand metres from urban areas of any size, delimited from urbanized area, or five hundred metres from urban limits, if larger. Controlled fires require strict authorization, issued by the Institute of the Environment - IMA, the Organ of the National Environmental System - SISNAMA or, depending on the State region, prior authorization provided by agency or institution officially designated by the Institute of Environment - IMA. The Law is divided as follows: Fires prohibition (Chap. I); Fires authorisation (Chap. II); Planning and Temporary Suspension of Fires Authorisation (Chap. III); Gradual Reduction as Fires Clearing Method of Sugar Cane Cutting (Chap. IV); Final provisions (Chap. V).
