Abstract This Law, consisting of 62 articles divided into eight Chapters, establishes the Basic Act on Social Protection. The objectives of social protection are: a) mitigate the effects of the reduction of workers' income in situations of lack or reduction of work capacity, maternity, unemployment and old age and guarantee the survival of their family members in the event of death; b) compensate for the increase in charges inherent to family situations of special fragility or dependency; c) to ensure means of subsistence for the needy resident population, as far as the country's economic and social development is concerned, and to promote, jointly with individuals and families, their insertion in the community, in full guarantee of responsible citizenship.
