Abstract The Law provides for the Research and Use of Native Plants of the Flora of the Rio de Janeiro State. It establishes that for afforestation projects of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Branches of the State of Rio de Janeiro, will be exclusively used native plants of the State flora. Forestry nurseries, administered by agencies linked to the Direct and Indirect Administration of the State will preferably produce seedlings of native plants of the State. In order to promote research and dissemination of native plants, the State Administration may: develop environmental education programmes focused on the valorization of native plants of the State; stimulate universities to develop study and research programmes aimed at training human resources with specialization in themes related to the State biodiversity; stimulate municipalities to use native plants of the State for the afforestation of gardens, squares, public places; and to establish partnerships aiming at the settlement of forestry nurseries aimed at the collection of seeds and the production of seedlings of native plants of the State.
