Abstract This Cooperatives Law, consisting of 13 Chapters, establishes the general principles applicable to the cooperative sector and regulates the activity of all cooperatives, based on national territory, regardless of their socio-economic status, including autonomous legal persons. It also establishes the rules on establishment of cooperatives, books and required documents, social capital, inscription fees and investment securities to the members, the bodies of cooperatives, expenditure, reserves and distribution of surpluses, the merger, de-merger or restructuring of cooperatives, the dissolution and liquidation , the unions, federations and confederations, dispute resolution and subsidies and fiscal and financial benefits, notwithstanding the Commercial Code, approved by the Charter Act of June 28, 1888, in the part concerning special provisions applicable to cooperative societies, and repeal the previous legal regime of Cooperatives, approved by Decree-Law No. 115/75, of 22 September.
