Abstract For the purpose of protecting national interests, national security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, countering terrorist activities, as well as preventing violations and restoring violated rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of citizens of Ukraine, society and the state may be applied special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions). Sanctions may be applied by Ukraine in relation to a foreign state, a foreign legal entity, a legal entity that is under the control of a foreign legal entity or a non-resident natural person, foreigners, stateless persons, as well as entities that carry out terrorist activities. The application of sanctions is based on the principles of legality, transparency, objectivity, fitness for purpose and effectiveness. The types of sanctions include: (a) restrictions on trade transactions; (b) restriction, partial or complete cessation of transit of resources and transportation through the territory of Ukraine; (c) cancellation or suspension of licenses and other permits, the receipt (availability) of which is a condition for carrying out a certain type of activity, in particular, cancellation or suspension of special permits for subsoil use; (d) introduction of additional measures in the field of environmental, sanitary, phytosanitary and veterinary control; and (e) ban on acquiring ownership of land plots.
