Abstract This Law, consisting of 24 articles divided into eight Chapters, creates the State Policy for the Sustainable Development of Aquaculture within the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The Policy aims at promoting the following issues: sustainable development of aquaculture as a source of food, employment, income and leisure, ensuring the sustainable use of aquatic resources, as well as the optimization of the resulting economic benefits, in harmony with the preservation and conservation of the environment and biodiversity; planning, promotion and inspection of aquaculture activities; preservation, conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems; and the socioeconomic and professional development of those involved in aquaculture activities. Beneficiaries of the Policy are individuals and legal entities that carry out activities to breed aquatic organisms in the State, duly registered and classified with the competent body.
