Abstract This Law amends Law No. 12.651 on the protection of Native Forests. Amendments establish general norms related to plant protection, permanent preservation areas and Legal Reserve areas; forestry exploitation requirements, control over the forestry origin products and prevention of forest fires, prescribing economic and financial instruments in order to reach the objectives. This Law aims at: Brazilian forests preservation and related forms of native plant, protection of biodiversity, soil, water resources etc., in order to guarantee the well-being of present and future generations; re-affirmation of the strategic importance of the agro-forestry activities and the role of forests and other forms of native plants for sustainability, economic grow, improvement of Brazilian populations’ quality of life; sustainable use of forests, mangroves and marine coastal zones (Chap. III-A), harmonization between the productive use of land and the preservation of waters, soil and plants; promotion of scientific and technological research related to innovation for the sustainable use of land and water, rehabilitation and preservation of forests and other forms of native plants; creation of economic incentives to promote the preservation of native forests e to promote the development of sustainable productive activities.
