Abstract This Law, creates the Intersectorial Policy for Medicinal Plants and Phyto-therapeutical Medicines in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The Policy aims to integrate governmental agencies in the implementation of initiatives related to medicinal plants, herbs, spices and phyto-therapeutical medicines, considering the interdisciplinary and inter-institutional aspects. The objectives of the Policy are: promote scientific research, technological development and innovation of medicinal plants and herbal medicines throughout the production chain; building capacities of professionals directed to the studies and the use of medicinal plants; stimulate the planning of agro-ecological production and the cultivation of medicinal plants, as well as the qualification of the entire production chain and trade of medicinal plants and herbal medicines; establish criteria for the production of learning material intended to guide practitioners and users about the correct use of medicinal plants and the rational use of herbal medicines.
