Abstract This Law, consisting of 68 articles divided into four Titles, establishes the State Policy on Solid Waste within the State of São Paulo and defines principles and guidelines, objectives, instruments for the integrated and shared management of solid waste, with a view to prevent and control pollution, protect and recovery environmental quality, and to promote public health, ensuring the use of environmental resources within the State. The objectives of the State Solid Waste Policy are: sustainable, rational and efficient use of natural resources; preservation and improvement of the quality of the environment, public health and the recovery of areas degraded by solid waste; reduce the quantity and harmfulness of solid waste to avoid the environmental and public health problems they generate and to eradicate "landfills", "controlled landfills", "kickbacks" and other inappropriate destinations; promote the social inclusion of waste pickers; eradicate child labour in solid waste by promoting their social and family integration; encourage inter-municipal cooperation, stimulating the search for joint solutions and the joint solution of waste management problems from all sources; promote the implementation of the selective collection system in the municipalities.
