Abstract This Law, consisting of 12 articles, creates the Fisheries Institute of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FIPERJ). FIPERJ will be the competent authority to carry out the following activities: promoting the rational use of living aquatic animals, improving fisheries industries at different levels, protecting water ecosystems and promoting their rational uses in a harmonious way. In particular, this Institute will be responsible for proposing, accompanying, supervising and implementing the State policies, aimed at the research, extension of production activities, industrialization, commercialization and consumption of living aquatic resources within the waters of the Brazilian Territorial Seas, Exclusive Economic Zones, Continental Platform and International Areas.
