Abstract This Law, consisting of 12 articles, establishes norms on the control of waste from vessels, pipelines and coastal facilities with the purpose of controlling the solid waste discarded by ships and commercial vessels within the ports of Santa Catarina. It establishes that it is mandatory within the State of Santa Catarina to comply with the procedures and criteria established by this Law for the above mentioned pollution control of waste. The procedures and criteria for the operations aim at the lowest risk of pollution of the coastal sea of the State. Any kind of waste, sewage, sludge, oily mixtures, dirty ballast, tank washing water and other materials that are to be disposed or removed from a coastal facilities shall be considered as waste. "Other materials" means any substance or material resulting from the operation or use of the vessel or coastal infrastructure, such as: a) residual oil from the engine; b) goods contaminated by polluting agents which render them unfit for normal consumption; c) replaced and spare parts of materials used for preventive or corrective maintenance of vessels or equipment of coastal infrastructures.
