Abstract This Law creates the State Programme for the Sustainable Development of Livestock for Family Breeders in the State of Mato Grosso (DESPECOF). It aims at implementing policies to encourage family breeders well-being within the State of Mato Grosso. DESPECOF aims to promote and coordinate integrated actions for sustainable rural development in an economically viable way, with social justice and respect for the environment. The Programme will be implemented through interactive projects, and partnerships with institutions of recognized technical capacity that can contribute to the development of the DESPECOF target audience. The objectives of DESPECOF are: stimulate the improvement of the genetic, nutritional and sanitary quality of herds and adoption of production technologies that are less aggressive to the environment; promote competitiveness for differentiated markets; encourage family breeders' associations and cooperatives; promote the improvement of the income of family breeders; encourage herd productivity; encourage the creation of specific research and development programmes; facilitate credit programmes for the agricultural sector; promote rural extension and technical assistance units; encourage the adoption of systemic management.
