Abstract This Law, consisting of two Titles, provides for fostering the protection and regulation of shrimp farming within the State of Maranhão. This State Policy on Shrimp Farming establishes the requirements to be satisfied in order to benefit from an authorization to perform such activity and recognizes it as an agrosilvopastoral activity, relevant for social and economic interest, producing a high nutritional food value, and creating income generating activities by establishing a new economic and social order in the rural areas and performing a sustainable exploitation of aquaculture resources in light of the conservation of the State environment.
