It prohibits mistreatment of animals and lays down rules for the keeping of animals. Killing of animals may take only for purposes of slaughtering or hunting or if the animal poses an immediate threat to human beings or other animals, for animal health and welfare purposes or for law enforcement purposes. The Law lays down general rules for the keeping of (livestock) animals and surgery on animals. Some provisions concern trade in animals. The Act also grants ample powers for further regulation by State Decree. The killing of animals for the purposes of slaughter is regulated by the Law on Public slaughterhouses, slaughterhouses and butchers.
