As a successor of the Kiribati Shipping Corporation, it will exercise functions in relation to any port to be declared as such by the Minister. Section 3, empowers the Minister, after consultation with the Kiribati Ports Authority, to declare any place or waters in Kiribati to be a port for the purposes of the Act. Sections 6 to 9 outline the functions and powers of the Authority. Section 9 in particular empowers the Minister under certain circumstances to acquire for the Authority land required by the Authority for a purpose authorised by this Act. Other sections provide for the sources of the Authority's funds, its borrowing powers, application of its revenues, powers of investment, levies, port services, the port master and prescribe offences.
