Abstract

This Joint Order establishes the procedure for determination of the density of radioactive contamination of soils in populated areas as a result of the Chernobyl disaster. It shall be applicable to inhabited areas and territory and defines: (a) composition and sequence of actions in the implementation of the survey of radioactive contamination of soils in the territory of the settlement; (b) composition and sequence of actions during density calculation of radioactive contamination of soils in the territory of the settlement; and (c) additional measures to ensure the reliability of the data obtained for determination of the density of radioactive contamination of soils in the populated area and the cases of their application. Survey of radioactive contamination of soils in populated areas includes: (a) a set of measures to determine the capacity of the ambient equivalent of gamma radiation dose (dosimetric examination of the settlement); (b) soil sampling in the settlement and its area; (c) preparation of soil samples for gamma-spectrometric analysis; and (d) measurement of 137 Cesium activity in soil samples by gamma spectrometric method analysis. Dosimetric examination of the settlement is carried out on testing grounds.
