Country/Territory Document type Regulation Date 2010 Source FAO, FAOLEX Subject Fisheries Keyword Marine fisheries Fishery management and conservation Fishing gear/fishing method Bycatch Cartilaginous fishes Offences/penalties Abstract This Measure of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), considering that illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) vessels fishing in the Convention Area are using gillnetting, that associated ghostfishing by lost or discarded nets has serious detrimental effect on the environment and that large quantities of non-target species, especially sharks and rays, that are killed by deep-sea gillnetting, prohibits the use of gillnets in the Convention Area, for purposes other than scientific research, is prohibited until such time as the Scientific Committee has investigated and reported on the potential impacts of this gear and the Commission has agreed on the basis of advice from the Scientific Committee that such a method may be used in the Convention Area.
