Abstract This Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) is a nationwide sectoral document developed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with the aim to achieve 'the stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system' as set out in Article 2 of the Convention. The target of the country is to reduce CO2 emissions by 11.5 % within 2030. The document contains mitigation measures whose primary drivers are (i) maintaining the low greenhouse gas emissions of the electricity generation; and (ii) decoupling growth from increase of greenhouse gas emissions in other sectors. The greenhouse gas inventory was carried out in the following sectors (i) energy; and (ii) industrial processes. To contribute to cost‐effective implementation, Albania intends to sell carbon credits during the period until 2030 of the low emission development pathway through participation in international market mechanism.
