Abstract

These Regulations provide for aid to eligible persons, defined in regulation 2, who undertake not to use eligible land for agricultural purposes for a period of 10 years. The beneficiary agrees with the Secretary of State upon a programme of management for the land and shall comply with obligations undertaken under these Regulations. The management requirements are set out in the Schedule to these Regulations and include: (a) the use of traditional materials for the maintenance of hedges and fences; (b) the beneficiary shall not plough, level, reseed, cultivate the land; (c) the beneficiary shall not install a new drainage system without prior written approval; (d) the beneficiary shall not apply lime or use any inorganic or organic fertilizer or specified herbicides and fungicides; (e) the beneficiary shall conserve and maintain all existing lakes, ponds and streams; (f) the beneficiary shall not cause overgrazing; (g) the beneficiary shall control pests in a lawful manner; and (h) the beneficiary shall agree within 6 months with the Secretary of State on programmes for mowing and grazing of livestock and certain conservation measures.
