Abstract

This Act, consisting of 99 sections divided into eleven Chapters, provides for continuous and uninterrupted, hygienic, piped drinking water, and to promote hygienic environment for public by removing and treating waste water and sewerage in the Guwahati Metropolitan Area. The Government shall constitute the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water and Sewerage Board. It establishes composition, duties and responsibilities of the above mentioned Board, entitled to provide for the following functions: supply of potable water as per CPHEEO standard, including planning, design construction, operation and management of water supply system; and sewerage, sewage disposal and sewage treatment works including planning, design, construction, operation and management of all sewerage treatment works in the Guwahati Metropolitan area; plan for, regulate and manage the exploitation of ground water in Guwahati in consultation with Central Ground Water Authority; promote measures for conservation, recycling and reuse of water; carry out any functions relating to the management and regulation of sewerage and ground water of any area; collect, treat and dispose-of sewage from any part of Guwahati and carry out works connected with sewerage, sewage treatment and disposal including planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of works relating thereto.
