Abstract

These guidelines on mainstreaming Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) into National Policies and Plans are a document issued to serve as a guidance framework for integrating SCP into respective national policies and plans to enhance their strategies and goals towards sustainability, as provided by the Environmental Management Act Cap 191, subsection 79(2)(d), which tasks the Minister for Environment to prescribe guidelines related to mainstreaming Cleaner Production, Sustainable Production and Consumption approaches in relevant policies at Government and company levels, essential to ensuring their development with a wider reaching set of outcomes than if they were undertaken on their own. Furthermore, mainstreaming environmental sustainability in national policy and strategy frameworks offers these key advantages (i) improved understanding of the connection between development and the environment, leading to better synergy management; (ii) enhanced national policy effectiveness across sectors, resulting in greater societal development gains; (iii) increased sustainability of the development process by minimizing environmental harm.
