Abstract

Program of horse breeding industry development in the Republic of Tajikistan for 2009-2016 is a sectoral nationwide policy document developed and implemented with a view of conservation and increasing the number of horse breeds, improvement of working characteristics and genetic qualities of horses for the purpose of trade thereof on internal and external markets. The Program is aimed at restoring the production capacity of existing farms and creating new horse breeding farms. The main goal of the Program is to further ensure the development of the Tajik breed of horses and their presentation at the international level. Further development of the horse breeding sector is of great importance, primarily in ensuring the country's food security and practical implementation of the poverty reduction strategy. At present, the horse breeding sector uses the cultural and herd breeding method. This method helps farms to use pastures rationally. Further development of the horse breeding sector will contribute to the implementation of the plan for breeding horses and improve their genetic qualities. The Program includes execution of the following tasks: (a) improvement of genetic and pedigree qualities of the Tajik breed of horses; (b) wide use of a labor force of horses (performance of works, use of horses in forestry, geology, archeology and at festive events); (c) use of horses in a classical kind of sports, triathlon, competitions, steeple-chase, at national games which raise sports and aesthetic morality of the population; (d) use of horses in historical and tourist places; and (e) increase in dairy farms for production of dietary therapeutic products, including koumiss (mare's milk) by increasing its production to 5 tons and providing regional, city and district hospitals; and (f) organization of exhibitions of Tajik horses in horse breeding farms.
