Abstract The purpose of this Regulation is to create environmental safety, food safety and safety of food for genetic engineering products (PRG), and utilization of PRG in the fields of agriculture, fishery, forestry, industry, etc. The Regulation consists of 10 Chapters divided into 37 articles: General provisions (I); PRG types and the required conditions (II); PRG research and development (III); Introduction of PRG from foreign countries (IV); Assessment, release and circulation, and utilization of PRG (V); Monitoring and control of PRG (VI); Institutional affairs (VII); Funding (VIII); Transitory provisions (IX); Closing provisions (X). PRG generated by research and development shall undergo an efficacy test and must meet biological safety conditions before being released and/or circulated. For the introduction of PRG from foreign countries, an application must be submitted to the authorized minister or to the head of non-departmental government institution (LPND) (art. 13). The competent authorities shall monitor and control the PRG circulating and being used in the Indonesian territory as specified in articles 25 to 27. Chapter VII describes composition and duties of the Commission for Biological Safety of PRG, the Agency for Clearance of Biological Safety of PRG and the Technical Team for Biological Safety of PRG.
