Abstract The present Government Decree implements the Animal Welfare Act (1998:95). It contains 39 Sections divided into the following chapters: 1. General provisions on animal care and supervision; 2. General requirements on stables and animal keeping areas; 3. Special requirements for certain animal species and their care and environment; 4. General requirements on pastures and fences; 5. Treatment of animals; 6. Interventions, breeding, etc.; and 7. On the size of boxes and stalls. As a general rule, animals shall be treated well and have established care routines and shall be protected against unnecessary suffering, stress and disease. They must be kept and cared for in a good environment and in such a way to promote their health and natural behaviour.
