Abstract

This Act, consisting of 12 Parts, aims at protecting the health and safety of people and of the environment by identifying the risks that could result from gene technologies and by managing those risks. The Act regulates the use of certain techniques and the release of GMOs into the environment. Under the Act, dealings with GMOs must be licensed and the licensing system is set out under Part 5. Part 6 provides for the creation and operation of a GMO register; Part 7 for certification and Part 8 concerns the creation and operation of the Gene Technology Technical Advisory Committee, the Gene Technology Community Consultative Committee and the Gene Technology Ethics Committee. The Act also contains provisions on its administration and enforcement.
