Abstract

An Act to regulate the activities involving gene technology, it consists of 194 sections and is divided in 12 Parts. Under section 3, “the object of this Act is to protect the health and safety of people, and to protect the environment, by identifying risks posed by or as a result of gene technology, and by managing the risks by regulating certain dealings with GMOs”. Part 3 is dedicated to the gene technology regulator, its functions and powers. Part 4 concerns dealing with GMOs, Part 5 the licensing system, including application procedures and fees. Part 6 deals with dealings on the GMO register. Part 7 deals with certification and accreditation, Part 8 states the functions under the Act of the gene technology advisory committee, of the gene technology consultative committee and the gene technology ethics committee. Part 9 deals with administration of the Act, Part 10 with enforcement and Part 11 with the powers of inspectors.
