Abstract

This Act provides for the designation of the Bureau of Standards, established under the Standards Act, as the Fresh Produce Quality Control and Inspection Authority and provides with respect to the control of fresh produce and related matters. The Act also establishes an Appeals Tribunal. The Authority shall, among other things: (a) determine applications for fresh produce export quality control licences and registration of packing houses; (b) identify areas in the fresh produce export market which require monitoring and inspection; (c) prepare and submit to the Minister reports on matters relating to the quality of fresh produce; (d) advise on measures which may be taken to maintain or improve the quality of fresh produce for export; (e) specify, fresh produce standards, packing house standards, packaging standards and labelling standards. The Act sets out requirements (including packaging and labelling requirements) for the export of fresh produce, i.e. any fruit, nut, vegetable, root crop, flowers, non–edible foliage, ornamental produce, plant or other plant material specified in the Schedule and provides for inspection. It also defines offences.
