No major amendments are made to the principal Regulations. The number of animals which constitute a "live-stock unit" is redefined leading to an increase in actual throughput in slaughterhouses operating within a low throughput limit. Also throughput limits are increased where animals are slaughtered for religious festivals or, subject to certain conditions, where individual operators use the same slaughterhouse to slaughter on their own account. Provisions are made for the microbiological testing of salmonella of meat destined for Finland and Sweden, deadlines for the completion of works required under the Regulations are extended, and certain provisions are made for the prevention of BSE.
