Abstract This Law is enacted for the purpose of ensuring food hygiene, preventing food contamination and harmful substances from injuring human health, safeguarding the health of the people and improving their physical fitness. It consists of nine chapters. Chapter I General Provisions. Chapter II Food hygiene, includes the provisions concern the requirements for hygiene in the process of food production or marketing; It rules 12 categories of production and marketing of foods shall be prohibited. Chapter III Hygiene of Food Additives. Chapter IV Hygiene of Containers, Packaging, utensils and Equipment used for Food. Chapter V Formulation of Food Hygiene standards and measures for Food Hygiene Control, if the State has not formulated hygiene standards for a certain food, the people's governments of the provinces, autonomous regions, or municipalities directly under the Central Government may establish local hygiene standards for that food and report them to the administrative department of public health under the State Council and the competent standardization administration department under the State Council for the record. Chapter VI Food Hygiene Control, provisions of controlling of food quality, the detail requirement for food additives, food containers, packaging and labelling. Further provisions regarding hygiene licence and the hygiene standard for imported foods or food additives. Chapter VII Food Hygiene Supervision, it outlines the duties for food hygiene supervision and the measures of control or prevention of food poisoning accident. Chapter VIII Legal Responsibility, offences and penalties. Chapter IX Supplementary Provisions, it gives the interpretation of the important terminology in this Law.
