Abstract

The purpose of this Act, consisting of 72 Sections divided into seven Parts and completed by three Schedules, is to establish a legal and administrative structure to enable and promote the conservation of Victoria's native flora and fauna and to provide for a choice of procedures which can be used for the conservation, management or control of flora and fauna and the management of potentially threatening processes (sect. 1). The objectives of flora and fauna conservation include: to conserve Victoria's communities of flora and fauna; to manage potentially threatening processes; to ensure that any use of flora or fauna by humans is sustainable; and to ensure that the genetic diversity of flora and fauna is maintained. The Act provides for the establishment of the Scientific Advisory Committee (Part 2), the listing of species for conservation measures (Part 3), the management process (Part 4), conservation and control measures (Part 5), and for enforcement, offences and penalties.
