Abstract

This Order, made by the Minister in exercise of the powers conferred by section 14(1) of the Fisheries Act 1997, provide for the protection of sharks and rays. They prohibit catching, mutilating killing, sale, export, etc. of sharks and rays and require unintentionally caught animals to immediately be released into the fishery waters. Fishing of sharks (except for some protected species) is allowed for private subsistence by local fishermen. Sharks and rays may be caught for scientific research purposes. Alien invasive species shall be removed from the fishery waters.
