Abstract

This management plan provides for the use and conservation of inshore fisheries resources of the gulf of Carpentaria, it consists of 94 sections and is divided into nine Parts. It sets closed seasons for barramundi (Part 2) and it declares which are closed waters (Part 3), as specified in the annexed schedules. Part 4 is dedicated to regulated fish, in particular to fin fish, mangrove jack and black jewfish. Part 5 regulates commercial fisheries, including fishing gears and mesh net. Part 6 is dedicated to recreational fishery and Part 7 states that the rights of Aborigines and of Torres Strait islanders are not affected by this plan. Part 8 covers the review, amendment and repeal of the plan and Part 9 contains miscellaneous provisions, among others on suspension of licences and on serious fisheries offences. The plan is completed by four schedules: the fishery, how the objectives are to be achieved, waters closed to taking fin fish for trade or commerce and aids to interpretation and definitions.
