Abstract

The present regulations provide for the enforcement of section 4 of the Fish Inspection Act. The regulations contains at the outset a definition clause relating to various terms therein employed, such as “can”, “canned fish”, “comminuted fish”, “core plant”, “crab”, “drained weight”, “fish sticks”, “grading”, “texture”, “live conditions”, “retail fish establishment”, “lobster-cocktail”, “secondary processing”,” shellfish”. Section 4 establishes that for the purpose of preserving the identity of fish, an inspector may detain the fish by attaching to the fish or a container of fish a numbered tag upon which shall be clearly written the items indicated in section 4. The text consists of 39 sections of which the most important ones are: Length of detention (5); Disposal of tainted, decomposed or unwholesome fish (6); Time limit for disposal (7); Reinspection (8); Labelling of fish or fish products (9); Particulars of required information (10); Quality designation (11); Tuna and lobster requirements (12); Code marking (13); Marking of master containers (15); Fish sticks (16); Scallops (17); Live shellfish (18); Marketing of live mollusca (19); Canning of clams, mussels and oysters (20); Fresh and frozen lobster meat (21); Lobster cocktail (22); Cleaning and disinfection of conveyances (25); Storage before processing (26); Sterilization method (27); Accessibility for inspection (30); Licence required (31); Fish processing licence (32); Licence fees (38).
