Abstract This Federal Law regulates relations in the sphere of radioactive waste management. Radioactive waste shall be classified as follows: (a) removable radioactive waste for which risks related to removal from their actual storage point and subsequent burial in another place and cost of such operation are lower than risks and costs for their keeping in the actual storage point; and (b) special radioactive waste risks related to removal from their actual storage point and subsequent burial in another place and cost of such operation are higher than risks and costs for their keeping in the actual storage point. The Government shall have the following competence in the sphere of radioactive waste management: (a) nominates national operator; (b) makes decisions on projecting, construction and operation of federal and interregional storage facilities for radioactive waste; (c) establishes tariffs for disposal of radioactive waste; (d) international cooperation; and (e) establishes classification criteria for radioactive waste. Import to the Russian Federation of radioactive waste for storage, recycling and burial shall be prohibited except for spent enclosed sources of radioactive radiation manufactured in the Russian Federation and returned to it in the form of radioactive waste.
