Abstract

These Regulations give effect to Council Regulation (EC) No. 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing. These Regulations are intended to avoid pain and to minimise the distress and suffering of animals at the time of slaughter. They provide, among other things, with respect to: killing of animals and sparing avoidable pain, distress or suffering to an animal during killing and related operations. Provisions concern methods of killing, certificate of competence of operators, use of equipment, layout and construction of slaughterhouses, monitoring procedures, inspections and compliance.
